a cabinet, a girl, and a dream

devereux et fils

I recently visited the weekly preview at one of my favorite DC auction houses. I anticipated a nice mix of vintage dressers, desks, and silver, but was unexpectedly taken by this pale green Dutch baroque china cabinet. It’s huge, and with its worn gilt trim and faded fabric backing, is a bit fussier than what I usually go for. But with some tweaking, I think it would look perfect in a big country kitchen, filled with vintage ironstone and porcelain. It would also work beautifully as part of a display in a really cool store.

Alas, we don’t have that kind of space in our house and I don’t own a brick and mortar store (though I do think about it — a lot), so didn’t bother to place a bid. I’ll just have to let this beauty pass … for now.

Happy hunting!

Headboards / 263

I wouldn’t have a bed without a headboard, odd as it may sound. It doesn’t look complete in the room, as if it’s yet to be finished. I am not talking about big oversized headboards, the more discrete & almost invisible. It’s more about the feeling as well as comfort. To be able to lean back when reading, are online or talking on the phone.

There are lots of different models of course, but still it’s hard to find just the style that fits. It often happens when you’ve already decided what you want or are looking for, without really being able to put into words how it looks like. Patience, it shows up sooner or later.

a bit of grey & white

I am uber proud of this!

I wanted to paint a sweet little rimu dining room table and chair set white, but hearing my father say “if you want to do it on your own, go for it” made me re-evaluate the amount of effort I was going to have to put in.  I found this chair in my sisters room and thought it would be the perfect first project to understand just how much time sanding, painting and upholstering might take.

My dad was saying that when he was younger, he and his sister sanded and painted the same piece of furniture.  I hope that someone in my family one day re-creates this chair in a way that will suit them so that it becomes an heirloom!

Swarm Chandelier by Zaha Hadid

The Swarm Chandelier for Established & Sons, designed by Zaha Hadid, expresses the sense of perpetual motion that characterizes the studio’s work. Its hundreds of reflective black crystals are suspended in petal-like volumes, as if thrown into space by a controlled explosion. From afar, the intricately layered chandelier appears as a unified whole, only revealing its varied modulations and sub-articulations upon closer examination.
